Coco Chanel, or rather Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, was born on the 19th of August of 1883 in Saumur, in the Maine-et-Loire region in western part of France. Her childhood was tough – after leaving a catholic orphanage in Aubazine she had to make a living on her own. She took up singing jobs in cafes, inter alia Moulins and Vichy, where she performed under the name “Coco”.
