The Paris Opera owes its name to the architect Charles Garnier, commissioned by Napoleon III to construct an opera house that would reflect the immense wealth of the Empire. The official opening took place in 1875 with the staging of Fromental Halévy’s La Juive. Construction took many years since, in that spot, the ground was marshy. Moreover, a subterranean lake was found, which had to be drained.
